Dear Parents/Guardians,
A big thank you to the parents, grandparents, and caregivers who came into the classroom last week for Noisy Reading, and for the parents who came out and supported us during the Terry Fox Run Friday morning. Thank you for the generous donations for the Terry Fox Run. The school will continue to collect donations until Oct. 4th.
It was great to meet and chat with parents who came to the Meet the Teacher Night on Thursday too. If parents ever have any questions or concerns, please email me ([email protected]), send me a quick note, or speak to me in person.
Last week we began our Home Reading program. The children chose one book from our school collection to read with an adult at home. Other books from home, or from the library, can also be read and recorded on the home reading record sheet. Ideally the children should be involved in reading for 15 minutes per night. (Adults can read to their child, or take turns reading pages with their child, or simply listen to their child read – depending on your child’s reading ability). The children record one book that they’ve read for each night, even if they have read multiple books. I will give the students one sticker each night they read, and once they have completed 25 nights of reading, they will get to choose a prize from our prize box. This cycle will repeat for most of the school year. Students can read on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays too!
This week in Language Arts we will continue to review the letters of the alphabet. This week the letters are f and p. Today your child has another homework paper in their orange duotang. On the front side, the children can practice printing their name, the lowercase letters a, m, and s and the word ‘it’. On the back side of the page, there is a grid of colour and number words that the children can practice reading. This week we will be learning about words in the ‘at family’ (ie: bat, cat, flat, hat, sat, etc.). Please actively supervise your child as he/she completes the printing practice page. They should print neatly with a pencil.
Our five words of the week (in our orange words of the week booklet) are if, as, had, are, and like. Have your child practice reading these words several times. If the words are easy for them, have your child practice spelling them on a separate piece of paper. The orange homework books and words of the week books can be completed and brought back on any day of the week, just please remember to have them returned by Friday.
In Math, the children will continue to work in their Number Books with the numbers 7 and 8. We are concentrating on the concept of number. For example, if the number of the day is 8, I ask the children to think of combinations of numbers that make 8. If I show them 6 objects, I’ll ask how many more to make 8. Sorting and patterning also continue to be a focus in math.
Our Nutrition theme continues this week as we identify foods in the Breads and Grains food group. My goal is to have the students learn the four food groups and be able to evaluate their lunch, or another meal, and decide if it is balanced and healthy. Also, an early focus on the types of foods we eat can help children make better food choices.
On Friday, Sept. 28, it is Orange Shirt day at Katzie. We are acknowledging the many aboriginal children who were taken from their homes and placed in residential schools between 1884 and 1996. In grade one, we read a few stories about residential schools, but our focus is “every child matters” regardless of their background or cultural heritage. Please encourage your child to wear an orange shirt on Friday.
Reminders: If you have not sent in the $3.00 for your child’s scrapbook, please do so by the end of this week. A few families still need to send in extra clothes to keep at school, and inside shoes. For all families that placed a Scholastic book order, the books should arrive early next week.
Thank you for your continuing support,
Mrs. Norton
